2016 ISMRM Junior Fellow

Dr. Chao Ma, Instructor at the MGH Gordon Center, was recently named Junior Fellow by the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM).

The award is a recognition of  “outstanding researchers at an early stage in their careers.” Dr. Ma will collaborate with his ISMRM mentor for a year to further his research in ultrahigh-resolution magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging.

SNMMI First Place Poster


Congratulations to Vasily Belov, PhD who won the First Place Poster of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) for his "PET Study of Burn-Induced Tissue-Specific Insulin Resistance."

His work demonstrated the primary role of impaired glucose uptake in skeletal muscles, specifically in the development of systemic insulin resistance after burn injury in a mouse model.

ImmunoPET: Engineered Antibody Fragments for Imaging Tumors and Immune Responses

Anna M. Wu, Ph.D. is Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology at UCLA. She was the guest speaker at a lecture organized by the MGH Gordon Center. Below is her presentation summary.

Engineered antibody fragments can provide a versatile platform for non-invasive imaging of cells and tissues based on cell surface phenotype. When labeled with positron-emitting radionuclides (such as I-124, Zr-89, Cu-64, F-18), engineered fragments can be employed for high resolution, sensitive, quantitative imaging by PET (positron emission tomography) and provide highly specific molecular assessments of tumor biology and response to treatment. For example, an I-124 prostate stem cell antigen (PSCA)-specific minibody demonstrates sensitive imaging in mouse models of prostate cancer and provides a PET imaging readout of response to anti-androgens. Antibody-based targeting and imaging of CD markers (CD4/CD8 on T cells; CD20 on B lymphocytes) provides a means for assessing immune cell subsets and monitoring responses to cancer immunotherapy, such as treatment with anti-CD137 or anti-PD-L1 antibodies. ImmunoPET can provide a broad approach for noninvasive, whole-body monitoring of key factors such as target expression in vivo, response to therapy, and immune responses, and stands to play an expanding role in the detection and management of cancer.

American Association of Physicists in Medicine Award

Congratulations to Quanzheng Li, PhD and Kyungsang Kim, PhD, who won the Low Dose CT Grand Challenge, hosted by the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM). Their algorithm achieved the best diagnostic performance on common low-dose patient CT datasets, among the participating teams from 26 countries. They presented their work and were presented the award at the annual conference of AAPM.

Seminar: Synthesis of Metal Complexes to Assist in Diagnosis and Therapy

Dr. Paul Donnelly, from The University of Melbourne in Australia, is conducting research to develop molecular agents that can be used in the diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s. In a conference organized by the MGH Gordon Center, Dr. Donnelly presented his effort to synthesize copper and technetium complexes that can bind Aβ plaques associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Donnelly also discussed the therapeutic possibilities created by the incorporation of radioactive metal isotopes into tumor targeting peptides.
